Bubba Does It Again
The 78th Master's Championship brought in tough competition this year as the competitors gathered in Augusta, Ga., fairing against each other head to head. Those who stood on Augusta National Golf Club's stomping grounds witnessed the rise and fall of champions.
Bubba Watson returned to his former glory in style, as upon the last day no one could match him. Not even the young contender Jordan Speith who matches up with Watson until the end. Dominating Augusta Watson was recognized as the first professional to win two masters jackets within two years of each (2012, 2014) other since the early 1950s.
Finishing with an 8-under-par, the big-hitting lefty from
Windermere, Flori., was welcomed into the elite Green
Jackets Club once more.
"It's overwhelming," Watson said in an interview
with ESPN."To win twice, to be with those great names –
A small-town guy named Bubba now has two green
jackets. It's pretty wild."
Bubba in a spectacular showing over the Master's Championship weekend pushed the field averaging 2-under-par each round. Never looking over his shoulder, Watson gained the lead and continued until it was only him and the fairways of Augusta. Never
Opening strong in the first two rounds Watson was turning heads as he moved his way up the leaderboard.
"I'd love to be No. 1 in the world," Watson said to Golf Digest reporters following his victory. "I'm trying every day to be the best golfer who ever walked this planet."
The only golfer who came close to beating Watson was 20-year-old, rookie contender Jordan Speith who started Sunday off as co-leader. Speith ended tied second on the day.
"What a dream come true competing at Augusta," Speith said. "Bubba Watson was a deserving champion who played incredibly. It stung badly losing, but it's just fuel going forward."
Speith in an interview with ESPN said there was nothing like seeing Bubba hit into the 13th fairway – remembering Watson's 366-yard drive.–
According to ESPN Watson finished the championship in style, is the only golfer who finished under a score of 70.
Nevertheless, there was no moment more intense than, the finishing hole when Watson's 2-year-old son Caleb walked up to congratulate his daddy, who was fighting back his tears.
"Yeah, I'm going to cry because why me?" Watson said to ESPN. "Why Bubba Watson from Bagad, Florida? Why is he winning? So I just always ask the question why. Why me?"
Upon conclusion of the Master's Championship in an ironic twist 2013 Master's Champion and No. 2 in the world Adam Scott, placed the Master's Jacket on Watson who had won the tournament in 2012.
Watson believed he was blessed enough to win one Master's Jacket, but two was indescribable.
I'm trying every day to be the best golfer who ever walked this planet.
-Watson
